Chapter Nine

Once they reached Silas’s house Jayme sat on the mattress, the only furniture in his mate’s house, and watched as Silas dashed around gathering what he needed. Jayme couldn’t believe he was really doing this for him. Silas was the type of man who followed the rules but here he was abandoning all that for him.

Jayme realized it was a little unreasonable to blame the council for what happened to his brother, but he couldn’t take any chances. Samuel was alive and Jayme wanted to make sure he stayed that way.

Before they left Silas’s house he asked Jayme for his cell phone. When he questioned, Silas explained that the council would be able to track them through their phones. He quickly handed it over. Silas shut it off and laid it next to his own on the pillow on the bed.

Silas drove two hours to Buffalo and parked his truck at a bus depot, and then they took a cab to the airport. They were able to get seats on a seven o’clock fight to Oakland. They’d have to get a rental car to make the drive to Monterey. But at least they had a plan. Jayme was anxious to get back to the house he used to call home. It held nothing but bad memories and regrets, but if it’d give him a clue as to where Samuel might be Jayme would kiss the fucking floors in appreciation.

Jayme sat staring out the large floor-to-ceiling windows at the dark night sky. They had about four hours until their plane took off and there was no way he’d could even pretend to relax or sleep. As he glanced over at his mate, he was glad he wasn’t even trying.

Silas sat staring straight ahead. His left foot tapped up and down, which Jayme found quite annoying, and his fist clenched tight on his thighs. A sheen of sweat covered his skin, and Jayme turned in his seat to better face his mate.

“What’s wrong with you?” He asked.

“I hate flying,” Silas answered, never looking Jayme’s way.

He hated to fly? Jayme found that odd because he had seen the man do it. They flew back from Las Vegas together. How could he possibly be bothered by flying now?

“Silas, you’ve done this before like two weeks ago. How is it even remotely possible to develop a fear so quickly?” The flight had been pretty uneventful. The takeoff went without any issues, no turbulence, and a very smooth landing. It had been one of the better flights Jayme had ever had.

“I’m not afraid,” Silas whispered harshly under his breath.

“Sure could have fooled me.” Jayme ran his fingers through his hair. He didn’t want to fight with his mate. “Okay, you’re not afraid, so what’s wrong then?” He gentled his tone as to not upset Silas. The man was breaking his hunter’s code to help him, he better not be an asshole to the only person who cared about him.

“I hate flying. I usually can hide it pretty good but for some reason I’m nervous as fuck right now.
